Promo + Giveaway: Wolf Hunger by Paige Tyler

Wolf Hunger
SWAT #7
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks | Kobo |Google |IndieBound
She’s all the wolf he’ll ever need

When SWAT Officer Max Lowry meets Lana Mason, he falls fast and hard. He’s positive she’s The One. And Max’s favorite part? Lana’s a wolf shifter too, so they can skip the awkward reveal and head straight to the happily ever after. There’s just one problem: Lana doesn’t know that she’s a werewolf.

To make matters worse, hunters with intent to kill have tracked Lana to Dallas. Max has to figure out how to keep Lana safe, show her who and what she really is—and just how much she means to him.

Excerpt:

“Speaking of award ceremonies,” she said to Max, “I didn’t see you on the stage getting a commendation, so I’m guessing you must be here to support someone who did?”

He nodded. “Yeah. Some of the members of my team got recognized today. How about you? Your boyfriend getting a commendation?”

Max thought he was being pretty damn smooth, but the smile tugging at Lana’s lips told him she saw right through his deception.

“Nope, no boyfriend,” she said. “Actually, it was my dad. Brandy took forever getting dressed. Then we got stuck in traffic. We barely made it here in time to see him get the award. I had to watch from the back of the auditorium.”

That explained why Max hadn’t picked up Lana’s luscious scent earlier. And while he was relieved she didn’t have a boyfriend, it made him wonder which of his fellow cops getting a commendation this afternoon could possibly have a daughter this smokin’ hot.

Max opened his mouth to ask her who her father was when another DPD officer walked by with a plate filled with a collection of various hors d’oeuvres. While Max wasn’t impressed with the selection of food, Lana looked at the appetizers longingly, even though she still had the ones her friend had given her. Maybe she wasn’t big on squash blossoms. He didn’t blame her.

“Would you like me to get you something else to eat?” he asked.

She glanced down at her plate, then shook her head. “Thanks, but unfortunately, the spinach puffs were the only thing remotely edible, which is probably why they’re all gone. I can’t believe they’re trying to pass this stuff off as food.”

He grinned. “I was just thinking the same thing a little while ago. I’m planning to head out as soon as this thing is over so I can get some real food.”

She leaned in close and gave him a conspiratorial wink. “Maybe we can slip out now while no one is looking. I can drop my car keys off with Brandy and we can disappear into the night. I’d just about kill for a slice of pizza.”

Any other time, Max would have been stoked to hear that. In his opinion, there wasn’t anything sexier than a woman who loved pizza. But right then, all he could think about was how his body was reacting to Lana’s nearness. Not only was his pulse racing, but his claws and fangs were dangerously close to coming out. He only hoped his eyes weren’t turning gold.

On the upside, at least he now knew for sure she was a werewolf. He could smell it in her pheromones. That was probably why they hit it off so well. Well, there was another reason, but he wasn’t about to go there—even if a little wolf voice in the back of his head whispered maybe he should.

Lana was telling him about an awesome pizza place that wasn’t too far away, wondering if he’d be interested in checking it out, but instead of answering her, he went in a completely different direction.

“It’s so cool finding another of our kind here,” he said. “I totally didn’t expect it.”

She didn’t seem to mind that he’d changed the subject, but she looked a bit confused. “Another of our kind? Are you a pescatarian, too?”

Max chuckled. That body and those looks combined with a wicked sense of humor? It was like she was made for him. A werewolf who didn’t eat meat? Now, that was epically funny.

Unless it was true, in which case it was a little strange.

Before he could say anything, Lana leaned over to look at something behind him, her lips curving into a smile. Max turned to see who she was looking at and was a little surprised to find Deputy Chief Hal Mason. The deputy chief was in charge of the police department’s specialized Tactical Division, which included the mounted police, canine unit, helicopter support, EOD, and SWAT. As a high-ranking officer in the department, Mason had to attend every award ceremony, but this time he’d been recognized for his commitment to developing his entire division, especially SWAT.

“Hey, Dad.” Lana stepped around Max to give Mason a hug. “I was looking for you and Mom earlier, but you were deep in conversation with some people and I didn’t want to interrupt.”

Max picked his jaw up from the floor and shoved it back into place. Lana was the deputy chief’s daughter?

Review: Light of the Spirit by Lisa Kessler

Light of the Spirit
Release Date: September 18, 2017
Publisher: Lisa's Lair
ISBN13:  9780997627473
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Author

The gods never sleep...

As the mortal vessel for the Muse of Comedy, Lia Youlos lights up every room with laughter and smiles. But there are darker forces at work, and they want to snuff out her light forever.

Cooper Hanover is a hardworking paramedic who healed Lia after a fire, but something happened that day, something medical science couldn't explain. And if he doesn't figure out how it works soon, the next healing could kill him.

Lia's smile and sharp wit tempt him to love again, and he's not going to let anyone, not even the gods, take her from him.

The Prophecy - "Every generation the nine daughters of Zeus are reborn, and with their rebirth are also nine Guardians. They will be marked by the gods, and given gifts to protect his treasure. Their abilities will only be unlocked when they find their muse."

Another Muse finds her Guardian in LIGHT OF THE SPIRIT.

I enjoyed getting to know Cooper and Lia. As with all the other couples, they had great chemistry and I enjoyed them by themselves as well which is always a bonus. On top of the romance in LIGHT OF THE SPIRIT, there was quite a bit of things going on outside of the couple that were addressed.

One thing I am not so excited about is the feeling I'm getting from a few secondary characters. I won't go too much into it as LIGHT OF THE SPIRIT isn't their story, but I hope that a certain Muse and this particular order member don't rekindle a romance in the future. I don't think I could forgive him for everything that he was involved in even if it meant her happily ever after.

I can always count on The Muse Chronicles to be a light, easy and quick flowing read. I always enjoy the mystery, the romance and the character development. Clio's book is up next.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Guest Blog: For Whom The Reap Tolls by Jack Wallen

UFI welcomes Author Jack Wallen. Thanks for Joining us!!

Top ten reasons writers write horror

“Hello, my name is Jack and I’m a horror writer.”

“Hi Jack.”

“Never say that on an airplane!”

That’s right, I’ll be here all evening. Tip your wait staff and blah blah blah.

Horror and dark, twisty fiction are my jam. I’ve been a fan since childhood and I do not see that changing before my time of dying. Be it straight up horror, urban fantasy, paranormal romance … I’m there. I write it, I read it, I watch it, I love it.

Unfortunately, the public at large doesn’t always have the same fascination for the genre as do I (and many others). This can lead to those of us who enjoy the genre, to feel as if we’re in need of some 12 step program to help shoo the monkey from our backs.

Or not. Truth be told, that monkey happens to feed our soul a great many metaphorical bananas. But why do we writers opt to take on that back-dwelling primate … especially when there are other, more popular and profitable genres to be had?

I’ll give you ten reasons why.

Ready? OK!

1.     All in the family. Many of us come from broken, dysfunctional families, such that we find it necessary to fly within horror’s orbit. Dealing with such flawed characters is like coming home, only without having to sleep on the couch or deal with creepy uncle Bob.
2.     Catharsis. I’ve been of the opinion that horror is one of the single most cathartic genres on the market. Writing something horrific (or even subtle) allows us to purge those demons that would otherwise take us down. We kill (on paper only, of course) those who would cause us pain in real life. Remember, if you were in my novel, you’d be dead by now.
3.     It’s sexy. Look at Kate Beckensail in Underworld...or Morticia Addams, the Bride of Frankenstein, Pinhead, Julie Walker (Return of the Living Dead 3), Marybeth Hutchinson (from The Faculty) … Buffy and/or Willow (or both). Come on! The list goes on and on. Horror is dead sexy. See what I did there?
4.     No safer fright. Let’s face it, sometimes the daily grind can get really boring. To that end, we might need a bit of a jolt to jump start our lives. That doesn’t mean we should all conjure demons, chase down serial killers, or become vampire slayers (see above). Horror allows us to take on such dangerous under the safety of our covers. Your heart may race, but you know you’re safe (under said covers). Scare those doldrums away with a good fright.
5.     Escape, escape, escape! Let’s face it, the world isn’t such a great place at the moment. When political, social, or personal unrest has you down, why not make the escape into a world that might serve to remind you that life isn’t really that bad. After all, you’re not being flensed by a beast with melting eyes, six hundred sixty-six teeth, and lava-red flesh.
6.     Testing the boundaries. Some of us just like to see how far we can bend and twist sanity and fear. It’s like creating your own world that will not only bow to your will, but serve as a testing ground for the human (or inhuman) condition. As we play God with these characters, we shout to the heavens, “Mu Ha Ha!” All in good fun … right?
7.     Yin with the yang. There are times we just need something to be used for comparison. It’s pretty easy to get wrapped up in a life of utter purity and perfection—until you’ve completely lost sight of the purpose. Writing/reading/watching horror gives us the perfect comparison to help remind us how good and evil fit into the world (and that life is not black and white).
8.     Mirror mirror on the wall. One of the main reasons why I write horror is to hold the mirror up to humanity and say, “Humanity, not only do you need to pluck your brows, you are the monster!” It’s a great way to remind ourselves how imperfect we are (see above).
9.     Your never alone. Many of us who dwell in horror’s shadows have felt alone for a very long time. We were outcasts in high school and never really managed to shed the trenchcoat mafia tag. If there’s one warm and fuzzy that horror offers it’s that fans stick together—like an extended family of freaks that love one another with an unconditional acceptance.
10.  Speaking of fans. One thing I have always found with horror fans is that they are, in most cases, some of the most loyal of any genre. When a horror fan finds a writer they like, they stick with them through thick and thin. Even when you’ve donned skis and a leather jack (to jump a shark or two), they’ll be there with you, along for the bumpy ride.

That monkey is now looking pretty sweet. And these reasons really only scratch the surface of nits on that furry monkey’s back. There’s so much more to love about the horror genre.

Promo + Giveaway: Flame in the Dark by Faith Hunter

Flame in the Dark
Soulwood #3

Set in the same world as Faith Hunter’s New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, the third, thrilling Soulwood novel stars Nell Ingram, who draws her powers from deep within the earth.

Nell Ingram has always known she was different. Since she was a child, she’s been able to feel and channel ancient powers from deep within the earth. When she met Jane Yellowrock, her entire life changed, and she was recruited into PsyLED—the Homeland Security division that polices paranormals. But now her newly formed unit is about to take on its toughest case yet.

A powerful senator barely survives an assassination attempt that leaves many others dead—and the house he was visiting burns to the ground. Invisible to security cameras, the assassin literally disappears, and Nell’s team is called in. As they track a killer they know is more—or less—than human, they unravel a web of dark intrigue and malevolent motives that tests them to their limits and beyond.

Excerpt Part 4:

“Can you prove he—it— wasn’t human?” Soul asked.
“Empirical evidence in a few days,” I said, speaking in my work accent. “Maybe. But not scientifically.”
Soul heaved a sigh she might really need. I wasn’t sure if her species needed air the same way humans did. Maybe they breathed through their pores or had holes in their rib cages or something. “I’d like you to speak with Ming of Glass and her bodyguard. See what you can get out of them. When you are done, they may leave, with our thanks.”
I stood, flatfooted, meeting Soul’s gorgeous and slightly amused eyes. At her side, Rick looked as surprised as I felt.
“Ummm. Don’t you think there might be someone better than me to talk to a vampire?”
“No,” Soul said. “You are precisely the right person to address the issue of paranormal beings who’ve committed first- degree murder and/or hate crimes with the highest -ranked vampire in Knoxville. And it will be an opportunity to rebuild bridges that you set fire to when you referred to all Mithrans as smelling ‘maggoty,’ I believe?”

Guest Blog: Maid of Ice by Shona Husk

UFI welcomes Author Shona Husk. Thanks for Joining us!!

I like to try new things as new experiences provide new fodder for my imagination. In 2013 I did Tough Mudder (I thought it would be fun and challenging and it was). For me it was a way to experience a range of things that I wouldn’t normally get to do. I jumped into the ice bath. I leaped from a 5 meter high platform into cold muddy water. I climbed a mountain made of hay bales (those things are prickly, so a roll in the hay would be most uncomfortable). I also go to experience what it was like to be cold and wet and exhausted (it was a 20 kilometer course—I completed it in 4hrs). All things that I can use later to draw in when I write.

More recently hubby gave me a gift voucher to do some hot laps at a local track. So I suited up watched the safety lecture and got into the race car. My first few laps weren’t that fast as I had to learn when to brake and when to accelerate around the turns. By the end I was hurtling around at 180km/hr…at the speed it looks like the track is going to run out before it’s time to brake.

The hot laps were useful when I came to write the first scene for Maid of Ice as the hero plays a racecar driver on a soap opera. The only way he can save himself is to use magic…but how many people will notice?

Blood and Silver #3

Stalkers and death threats . . .
For Finlay Ryder, danger means playing a racecar driver on a daytime soap. That is, until he’s forced to reckon with his true identity as an Albah, a magical ancient race, by one of his own kind. Someone wants him dead. And worse, an ancient vampire is on the prowl, drawing blood left and right. Now, Finlay has no choice but to hunt enemies with unspeakable powers—or risk being hunted himself . . .

. . . and that’s just the first date
Ice skater Alina Nyx is using her broken wrist as an excuse for a career change. And when she falls for handsome Finlay, Albah drama feels like her new full-time job. Learning about magic and vampires is exciting, until her life is threatened. Now, as she begins to uncover her own mysterious powers, she must combine forces with Finlay to eradicate their foes for good, or all Albah will suffer . . .

Excerpt:

The steering was heavy, which wasn’t a good thing at racetrack speeds. Finley Ryder didn’t know enough about cars to determine what was wrong and keep the race car on the track while it hurtled around the corner at over one hundred miles an hour. He eased off the accelerator and tried to remember all the lessons he’d had before being allowed to drive the car himself.
Nothing came to mind that would save his life. The steering was getting harder. He wasn’t going to make the next corner and it was coming up way too fast.
“Car’s not responding.” Finley said into the microphone in his helmet. The microphone wasn’t there for his team to call out tips. It was there for the film crew to give him instructions and for him to spout any lines they needed said.
    “What do you mean?”
What he meant was he was jelly in under ten seconds. “No steering.”
He pressed the brake, to slow the car so he didn’t hit the wall as fast. He swore. It wasn’t going to stop in time, that much was clear. “Make sure you get the accident. You might need it for a later episode.”
When they’d have to kill off his character.
Finley didn’t like his chances of walking out of this. Panicked voices filled his headset. They were never going to let him do his own stunts again after this, no matter how qualified he was.
His heart beat fast, pumping fear into his body. This was not how he’d planned on dying—he hadn’t made those plans yet. He didn’t give a shit how expensive the gearbox was. He tore his way down through the gears trying to slow the race car. There were sirens, emergency vehicles were already on the track. He didn’t take his eyes off the concrete wall to find out where they were. He knew what they were doing.
    They were coming for him.
The car slowed, but not enough.
He drew in a breath to calm the rising panic. This counted as dire situation, and he didn’t care who saw or what questions they asked. He drew the air around him into a shield. He’d tested his magical abilities before, but not like this. He wasn’t sure any Albah had.
    He was making history.
With an exhale, he pushed every bit of will he had into cushioning himself, and the car, from the impact. If he’d been able to access some skin under all the safety gear, he’d have added blood into the mix.
His eyes closed as everything collapsed around him.

Early Review: Lure of Oblivion by Suzanne Wright

Lure of Oblivion
Release Date: November 21, 2017
Publisher: Montlake Romance
ISBN:   1542049725
ISBN13: 9781542049726
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

Gwen Miller may be a human, but she has no problem taking a stand against her own kind. She’s going to testify against the teenage boy she saw viciously assault a lone shifter female—and no amount of pressure from the boy’s wealthy family will make her back down. But when the harassment turns violent, help comes in the form of a lean, toned wolf with winter-gray eyes.

As a guest at Gwen’s inn, shifter enforcer Zander Devlin can’t help but notice that the fierce and leggy brunette is in serious trouble. Since she’s putting herself at risk for one of his kind, keeping her safe is the least he can do. That’s not the only reason Zander wants her close. He desires her, even as the wolf inside him backs away from her. But his feral instincts are hard to keep down, and as they take shape, they’re harder for Gwen to resist. Then again, embracing them could be the only thing that could save her life.

LURE OF OBLIVION was a little different from previous Mercury pack books.

Different how? Well for starters, Gwen is human. Now don't make any mistakes, she might be human, but she's a total bad @ss. I totally loved her and can't wait to see her in future books as she continues to grow with the pack. I can't say that I came into LURE OF OBLIVION knowing anything about Zander. Sure we have seen him in past books, but he didn't stick out to me or draw me in and make me yearn for his story. I didn't finish book three totally loving him—he could be a bit of a jerk and his bedroom talk didn't do it for me—but I liked him.

The relationship between Gwen and Zander was slow, but built nicely. They had nice chemistry and their attraction towards each other jumped off the pages.

The story as a whole was decent. There was plenty of conflict, some life and death action, and the secondary characters added some nice twists to the story. There were a few slow dragging spots and I would have loved for the whole pack to be more involved, but enough of them were there to make it ok.

I haven't met a Suanne Wright book that I didn't like and LURE OF OBLIVION definitely hit the like list. Not her strongest book, but still enjoyable it and look forward to more.

I gave it 3.5/5 Stars

Promo: Witch of Death by Chrys Fey

Witch of Death

Amazon US / Amazon UK / The Wild Rose Press / NOOK / KOBO
$0.99 CENTS!
Murder isn’t always committed with magic unless a witch is involved.

Detective Reid Sanders doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but when he’s faced with a crime scene that defies the laws of nature, he has no other choice but to start believing. And solving a magical murder involves working with a witch.

Liberty Sawyer embodies the look of your classic evil witch, so, it’s no surprise when she uncovers the murderer is a witch that she becomes Reid’s number one suspect. If she can’t convince him otherwise, more people could lose their lives to dark magic, including her.
Excerpt:

Liberty Sawyer glided swiftly through the horde of police officers, reporters, and on- lookers. Black hair fell from a rigid part in the middle of her scalp to her hips. Her eyes were a soul-stabbing blue and her lips were blood-red. She towered over the other officers on the scene, and wore all black, which set off the pallor of her skin.
Showing her badge to the officer, she slipped under the crime scene tape. A few paces away, she spotted Detective Corbin talking to his new partner, a man she knew by name but hadn’t had the privilege of meeting yet.
“I cannot believe you called her,” the new man was saying when she came up behind them. “We don’t need a damn psychic!”
“Actually, I’m a witch.” She smiled when Reid jolted and turned to face her. “I’m Detective Liberty Sawyer.” She stuck out her hand.
“Detective Reid Sanders,” he grunted back and took her hand.
The feel of his palm against hers sent tingles of lust from the tips of her fingers to her shoulder blade, and she knew he felt it too by the way he jerked his hand back. She winked at him playfully, hoping it would unnerve him even more.
